In 98% of cases the sellers themselves have no idea what they're talking about. How to tell a normal seller from a dilettante. Spend 5 minutes yourself on this topic and figure out what leathers exist and what to look at. Hermes uses a huge number of different leathers. Each one has its own traits, pros and cons. Main types of Hermes leather. Togo is the king of popularity. The most popular Hermes leather. Made from female calf hide, has fine grain and characteristic veins though not on every piece. Fairly light, scratch-resistant, recovers easily. Over time it can sag a bit especially on large bags. If a seller talks about Togo ask whether the veins are visible, what the grain looks like, what the weight is. A real pro will explain the difference right away. Clemence is the heavy brother of Togo. Made from male calf hide so heavier than Togo. Grain is larger, no veins at all. Softer and sags more over time. Many people confuse it with Togo but the differences are obvious if you know what to look at. Epsom is the practical choice. Leather with embossed grain, fairly stiff and light. Holds shape well, scratch-resistant, can be wiped down with a damp cloth. But the grain is artificial, wears off at contact points and this cannot be restored. Swift is delicate beauty. Soft leather with barely visible grain, almost smooth. Scratches easily, sags over time but scratches can be removed through restoration. Takes colors very well. Chèvre is goat leather, the elite segment. Indian goat leather with characteristic grain and a visible spine down the middle. Very durable, scratch-resistant, but usually only available through special orders and mostly on small bags. Box is the classic. The oldest Hermes leather, smooth and glossy. Scratches very easily but those scratches turn into a beautiful patina over time. Stiff, holds shape excellently. Cannot get wet since the leather will swell. Less popular but important types. Barenia is the legendary leather, originally for saddles. Almost magical because it absorbs scratches when you rub them. Develops patina, has a characteristic smell. Evergrain (Evercolor) is soft, with tiny grain, has a light sheen. Negonda is mainly used on the Garden Party, soft, water-resistant. Doblis is Hermes suede, very soft but delicate.
